A Kansas City Entertainment and Dining Icon Returns

By: Michael Cardirello

With the exception of Independence being the birth place of  former President Harry S Truman and Overland Park being the World Wide Headquarters of Communications giant Sprint Nextel, there is little a Kansas City Native can depend on being noticed for while traveling outside of the Kansas City area.

However, whether it be Washington State or Washington DC you’re visiting, everyone knows our cities long history for being the birth place of the Blues and our world wide notoriety for Bar BQ and good ole down home cuisine.

No one in Kansas City knows this better then Joe and Mary Kay DiCarlo. For more then four decades the DiCarlos have been entertaining and feeding the people of Kansas City in the manner in which they are accustom. Their contribution to the Dining and Night Club scene is well known to the area residents and may be one of the few things that Kansas City is known for outside of the immediate area!

However, as the early 90’s saw the final death of Disco, the rise of Grunge and the resurrection of Rock and Roll, the DiCarlos East Kansas City Restaurant “The Mustard Seed” closed its doors and at the hands of others, the location went through a variety of  failed ventures over the past 15 years, but that’s all about to change.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with the DiCarlos and take a tour of their resurrected “Mustard Seed”. Joe and Mary Kay have gutted the old restaurant and built a true monument to fine dining and quality entertainment for all to enjoy. From the hand picked Mexican Artwork to the Marble and Stone laden interior to the fine antique tile over the center piece bar, the new Mustard Seed promises to impress and satisfy.

The DiCarlos are building a functional environment that will allow patrons to take pleasure in the class of a well laid out environment while adding the modern touches so desperately needed in the industry today! Diners will enjoy the benefit of a quality and affordable Mexican Menu coupled with unique and hard to find entertainment or attend a working lunch with colleagues while utilizing the restaurants free WiFi service. There is a beautiful outdoor patio and seating for more then 100 indoors which include two private party areas for large groups. They have really thought of everything!

For reservations or information contact Joe or Mary Kay DiCarlo at “The Mustard Seed” 15016 E. 40 Highway, Kansas City Missouri 64136. (816) 373-4240.
